Our front Yard... again.

When I went out for smoke this evening I saw what appeared to be a log with branches floating in the bay, then I realized, without tree's its difficult to have floating logs. Luckily (as usual) I had my camera and Telephoto lens with me and I saw the log was a caribou about half a mile out swimming towards my front lawn.
I was the only one who had seen him for about the first ten minutes so I was able to get down to the beach and make some noise to divert him from his path. If he came out of the water where he planned to he wouldn't have made it 3 steps before being invited to dinner by one of the local men.
However, by this time about 20 people had gathered to watch this buck make the most dangerous journey of his life. I still held up hope though as so far I'd seen people but no rifles. Caribou aren't plentiful in this area and his little attempt at socialization was most likely still going to cost him his life. Its strange, If I'd been out hunting I would have shot this buck myself however when he comes to your door you kinda want to treat him as a guest.
After his redirection he came to ground just across the river in a area where the town usually held picnic's and other events. I couldn't see anyone over there and I took that to be a bad sign, It looked like the hunters where already hunkered down awaiting his arrival.
With amazing luck, it seems this particular Buck made it safely to ground and quickly sprinted away, and since I didn't hear any shots for the next 5 minutes, we're going to presume he made it.
These 2 children are showing me thier best "tuutut" impressions.
Hello everyone,
Some people pay thousands of dollars to travel to the far north to see what I get to when I walk out my door. Tonight after this little adventure I watched two eco-tourists walking along the road in front of our house, the strange thing was, they had their camera's, their north peak windbreakers and hiking boots, eye's focused out to the bay... but they still walked like they were in the city. That hurried walk as if you have to get somewhere where someone impatiently waits for you, you can take the man out of the city, but not the city out of the man.

Reflections of Spring

I got these photo's Wednesday night as we had a storm coming in. They were taken at Midnight and thats a pretty cool moonrise.

With shades of Iwo Jima the town has started cleaning up after a long winter. Across the Bay on a small island there is some sort of memorial or cairn tat had a large piece of wood marking the center of the memorial. This log was blown over and in this photo some local men are setting it right again.

Cold feet anyone, The Ravens have left town and the seagulls have returned.
Just before the thaw, most of the dogs in town were taken to the land for the summer, This team was one of the last I saw leave. They will live on the land for the summer when they aren't needed and will be brought back to town after freeze up in the winter.
The nets ave started to appear in the bay as local people are anxious for the sea's bounty

Hello Everyone,
Spring as sprung and summer seems to ave reared its ugly little head in these parts. The town has finished cleanup, the boats are all readied and heading to the water this week to all outward appearances and it seems everyone is spending their time out in the camps. Soon the daycare will be shutting down for the summer and Christopher and Mom will get to spend some time together before the beginning of Christopher first school year. Time flies when your having fun.
We ave finally confirmed vacation (again), this time there will be no changes, I've made it clear that this is final and plans are made. So, We'll be coming south in the second week of September
Hopefully everyone in the south is keeping cool, and life remains enjoyable.

Ok, so we have a hospital.

Down our street and around the bend.
Our new little house, good thing this is a temp location this is a small house.
Over the bay towards the Co-op hotel.
Hide and seek, move in style

Hello Everyone,
when we moved here we assumed that having a hospital in town would lead to a increase in medical services available. As usual assumptions made in the part of the world are wrong. In the town's were we had a nursing station you could go to the clinic 9-5 and get help, after hours you'd call the on duty nurse for emergencies. Now that we are in a town with a hospital the clinic hours are usually 1-4 monday to Friday. Strange, but I'm sure having a resident doctor has its advantages, and I'm sure like all medical staff up here, the people working at the hospital are doing everything they can with what they have. For the last 5 weeks I've had a toothache and it seems that next Thursday someone will be able to do something about it as I have a appointment with the dentist this day.
we start inventory on sunday so hopefully we can get that put to bed before my appointment.

Another Week has come

Hello Everyone,
We it seemed that not allot had happened this week, so tonight I borrowed a ski-doo and we all went out on the land for a couple of hours, and man was it cold. -30 times 60 miles a hour on a ski-doo times 40 miles a hour winds = lots of winter wear. One amazing thing was if you drove too long the engine would get too cold, you had to stop with the sled out of the wind and let it rev up for a couple of minutes to warm it back up. No matter how close you look at these photo's I don't think you see any exposed skin (Ok, I just checked, you can see Melissa's nose). The item you see Christopher playing with out on the bay, was a bag he found frozen into the ice and tied closed with rope, We inquired no further than that, I'm almost positive that I really, really don't want to know what was in there.
The dog teams headed out of town on Friday after their 5 day layover, I guess their racing times don't include time spent in town as the race is two weeks old and the leaders time is 22 hours when he left town. There is a photo of the teams getting ready to leave Friday morning, I don't actually have any photo's of the race beginning, to be frank, I just got sick of going out there every day waiting for the race to start, then hearing they decided it was too windy or too cold to race.
The other photo is yet another photo of George and someone else having fun out on the bay.
